The Star of Satin Island
The Island off of Lone peak Harbor. Satin Island. I am sure you have heard of it. The island that “glows in the night” as they say. I realize to some that it may be a tired topic, but I feel the island is often overlooked. Sure it is small, but what about the glow? Why do people so easily dismiss it? People claim it is just a story to tell children in order to scare them, as many nighttime tales do, or perhaps to spark their thinking about things we don’t understand. I, however, know the truth of the matter. I have seen it before. Many times actually. Comes around at roughly 2 in the morning, when the mist settles in. Through the misty haze there is no doubt a glow. You may not believe me, but I just say that you should take a look for yourself, and you will know. You can see it just as I have, and in doing so I have no doubt you will experience that eerie feeling just as I do. A feeling of the glow in the mist almost… calling to you. It is just past 2 now and looking out, ah yes, there it is. Never a missed night. The glow of Satin Island, paying its dues yet again.
It’s… a wondrous sight really. A brilliant blue light emanating from the island, somewhat like a star has taken up residence here with us. I can hear it calling again… Tonight is the night! I’m going to see what is the cause of this star on Earth. I don’t have a particular reason why, to be honest, I just feel compelled to if anything. I’ve got a small boat here… it’s already loaded up with a flashlight and paddle. I don’t really think I would need much else considering the island is only 10 minutes out, and I don’t plan to stay for long, so why bother? I guess I should put this all into perspective for you while I am paddling out. I’ll start with the boat. I got it from Archy at the rental shop by the docks, but it was quite a hassle. He is convinced that Satin Island should be avoided at all costs, that it just isn’t natural. He told me I was crazy for wanting to go there. I told him, I don’t care.
Archy insisted that I reconsider, but I made it clear that I wasn’t changing my mind so he reluctantly gave me the boat to use. However, there is always a catch. Before he let me leave the shop, he made me tell him all I knew about the island, which mind you wasn’t much, and then in I suppose some last ditch effort to persuade me to stay, he told me about the red mist. He said there was a night where the star of the island had dulled away and the mist surrounding it was a heavy red. I’ve never seen such a thing, so I have no idea what he was talking about, but now I just want to figure this all out even more. I mean, how weird does it get? Figuring out the mystery of the glow, as I like to call it, would make me some kind of hero on the mainland. It would finally put all the myths to rest, including my own curiosity. The star’s call is feeling stronger now… it is incredibly soothing. The island is close… and I think I hear a voice… a soft voice… coming from the star?
No it can’t be from the star. That’d be crazy… or would it? Maybe there is someone there? But the voice, it feels like it’s in my head. It’s so… calm and soothing… it keeps calling me… Okay now that’s crazy! Here’s the island. I need to figure out what this is already, for my own sake at least. I’ll just pull the boat up on the sand here, should hold… okay. There it is. The famed light of Satin Island. It’s a brilliant blue ball of light, the star or our own sun even, perhaps even the tail of a fierce comet. No. This is beyond that. It’s almost… mesmerizing even. Strange, the voice just stopped. Not a hint remaining. Was it the light before me? It seems so otherworldly, so maybe it was. I’m not talking crazy, no, no, no. A crazy person would have just sat at home and wondered. A logical person like me would be out here figuring this out. The great mystery of Satin Island. I’m out here solving it. I’ll be a hero… A hero. I just have to get closer.
There it is. The voice again. It keeps telling me, “Come. Come closer. Come to me.” But it is so faint; maybe I’m just imagining it. My feet don’t seem to care though, continually moving towards the light as if on their own. Jesus, what is going on? Ah the hell with it, I just need to figure out this island so I can go back home. That’s all I have to do. The light is so close now, not 50 feet off… the voice is gone again. It’s a dead silent night. Not even the slightest sound from the ball of light. This, this thing. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. This is what brought me out here. This is what pulls on so many people’s imaginations. And yet here I am, and this brilliant thing… I can almost touch it… What the? No! No, no, no! The light! It’s gone! Just vanished in an instant! No, God no. The wondrous light, bring it back! Don’t play with me like this! My star is gone… and the only thing left… a red mist? Oh you have got to be kidding me! Is this what Archy was talking about? Is he the one who took my star away? How dare he! He had no right! No right at all… wait. What was that? Hello? Who’s out there? Are you the one who’s been talking to me? Did you take the star away? Answer me! What… no, oh my god, no, stay away from me! Ahhhh!
